Every Word of The Bible/Billy McGee McGaw
Climax Golden Twins
Highly Bred and Sweetly Tempered
North East Indie
A near-fight broke out in the office when this disc arrived. Who gets to listen to it first? In order to circumvent violence we did a sans headphone group listen. Ah, and once again I'm reminded how much I love, love, love the Climax Golden Twins. Over the past nine years I've enjoyed the trickling stream of releases by the Seattle-based trio—most came in odd formats from 10" vinyl to 3" CDs. What's so special? Well, for starters every CGT recording is a mini vacation at your beck and call. The sensation of travel, both physically and emotionally—including the anticipation while packing, troubles getting through customs, the thrilling confusion of other languages barking around your eardrums, the unconfessed homesickness of a prolonged sojourn, and the bittersweet excitement of returning home—oozes out of the music, which is a functioning tour guide to the uncharted, or a sonic maharishi. The latest CGT effort, Highly Bred and Sweetly Tempered, wedges itself somewhere between field recording and post rock music, reincarnating the lethargic melancholy of Sigur Rós's Agaetis Byrjun had it been buried in a time capsule by some lost civilization and what we hear is a montage of the search and unearthing, along with the documentary film soundtrack detailing the historic events. While tapping the zeitgeist CGT explores both the exotic and banal in equal measure. Like any journey down the proverbial rabbit hole, scale becomes superfluous as small sounds grow into looming giants inside this surreal sound painting. As loose ends unravel and sway into the horizon, kickback in a hammock and enjoy the trip. —RN
