HMSL or Hierarchical Music Specification Language flaunts its flexibility on this recording from one of its developers and top promoters, Larry Polansky. From Woody Guthrie/Javanese gamelan fusion to a resynthesis of Ruth Crawford's Piano Study in Mixed Accents and even farther afield to a work for two electric guitars and rock band, Polansky effectively demonstrates some of the diverse possibilities of the 20 year-old compositional computer language. Other works included on this recording demonstrate Polansky's affection for microtonality and gradual modulation. While the scores may be primarily computer generated, this music maintains a human soul.
