76 COMPOSERS FEATURED IN SCI 1999 NATIONAL CONFERENCE

The 32nd National conference of the Society of Composers, Inc. took place in New York City the weekend of April 22-25, 1999. The four day event included thirteen concerts presenting the music of seventy-six composers from across the country as well as paper presentations on topics ranging from Pitch structure and text in Franz Schubert's "Der Doppelganger" to the influences of sound recording in the Twentieth century. In addition, there was a special presentation by Ruth Schonthal on women and minorities in music with Victoria Bond as panelist and Marshall Bialosky as moderator. Saturday's session included a workshop entitled "Basic Skills for Composers" with Richard Kessler, the Executive Director of the American Music Center. In addition to performances of pieces by long time SCI members, this years conference included new pieces by Emily Doolittle, Stefan Freund and Howard Yermish, the winners of the 1998 SCI/ASCAP Student Commissioning Contest.
