April 22, 1999 -- Nine American composers were among the 179 recipients of fellowships from The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation for 1999: pioneering California post-minimalist Ingram Marshall (now based in Hamden CT); seminal free jazz percussionist Andrew Cyrille (Montclair NJ); Brooklyn-based composers Derek Bermel and Randall Woolf; Russell Pinkston, Associate Professor of Composition and Director of the Electronic Music Studios at the University of Texas at Austin; Tamar Diesendruck, a Bunting Institute Fellow at Radcliffe College (Somerville MA); Kurt Rohde, Artistic Director of Chamber Music Partnership (San Francisco CA); Paul Koonce (Princeton NJ); and Steven M. Burke (Hopewell Junction NY). The 179 United States and Canadian Fellowships awarded in 1999 total $6,062,000 (with an average grant of $33,866). There were 2,785 applicants. The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation was established in 1925 by United States Senator Simon Guggenheim and his wife as a memorial to a son who died April 26, 1922. The Foundation offers Fellowships to further the development of scholars and artists by assisting them to engage in research in any field of knowledge and creation in any of the arts, under the freest possible conditions and irrespective of race, color, or creed.
