April 13, 1999 - American composer Lou Harrison was honored with the Michael Callen Medal of Achievement at the third annual Gay & Lesbian American Music Awards (GLAMA) at the Manhattan Center Ballroom in New York City. The award was presented by Joseph Dalton, Executive Director of Composers Recordings Inc. CRI, followed by a video-taped acceptance by Lou Harrison. The Michael Callen Medal is one of GLAMA's two most prestigious awards. The other, the Outmusic Award, was awarded to Ani DiFranco. (Last year's Michael Callen Medal was given to k.d. lang.) The Award for Contemporary Classical Composition was a tie between Lowell Liebermann, for his Flute Concerto featured on the CD James Galway Plays Liebermann {RCA Victor-BMG Classics}, and Paula M. Kimper [AMC Member], for "I Want To Live" (a duet from her opera Patience & Sarah) which is featured on the CRI disc Lesbian American Composers (CRI 780). Fred Hersch was the winner of the Jazz Award for his solo piano performance of "In Walked Bud" on the disc Thelonious: Fred Hersch Plays Monk {Nonesuch}. Other winners include Bob Mould and the Klezmatics.
