At its Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony on Tuesday May 4, 1999, the American Music Center honors the professional accomplishments of six American leaders in contemporary music. Elliott Carter is the recipient of the AMC's first-ever Founders Award, in recognition of a lifetime of achievement in music. In addition, the AMC presents the prestigious Letter of Distinction to Ellis Freedman, Philip Glass, Harvey Lichtenstein, Mel Powell (in memoriam), and the California EAR Unit. AMC award recipients are selected for their substantial contributions to advancing the field of contemporary American music in the United States and abroad. The American Music Center has been awarding its Letters of Distinction annually for the past 35 years. The 1999 awardees join a celebrated group of fellow composers, musicians, and organizations who have also received this honor including Leonard Bernstein, John Cage, Dizzy Gillespie, Yo-Yo Ma, Bette Snapp, John Duffy / Meet The Composer, and the American Composer's Orchestra. The American Music Center's Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony takes place at Lincoln Center's Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse (165 West 65th Street in NYC) from 5:00-8:00 P.M. and is open to all AMC members and invited guests only.
