New York, June 6, 1999 - Composer/lyricist Jason Robert Brown has won the 1999 Tony Award for Best Score for the musical Parade, his Broadway debut. Based on the book by Alfred Uhry, and directed by Harold Prince, the musical recounts the true story of Leo Frank, a Jewish man living in Atlanta who is wrongfully convicted of murdering a 13 year old girl in 1913. Parade was recently released on CD following a two-month run at Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont Theater (December 17, 1998 - February 28, 1999). The 28-year-old Brown has previously written Songs for a New World, directed by Daisy Prince at the WPA Theatre Off-Broadway. Brown is also an arranger and orchestrator whose credits include A New Brain, jon & jen, Dinah Was and Yoko Ono's New York Rock.
A tour for Parade begins in Atlanta in the summer of 2000.
