54TH NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF THE AMERICAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA LEAGUE TAKES PLACE IN CHICAGO
Chicago, June 9-12, 1999 - The 54th National Conference of the American Symphony Orchestra League has taken place in Chicago IL, hosted by The Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Music for a New Millennium, the League's multi-year initiative to help orchestras succeed in presenting contemporary American music, was a focus of this year's conference which featured three days of sessions, symposia, and concerts exploring new works, new technologies, and new ideas. Highlights included a look at how the past informs our present with speaker Michael Steinberg, concerts by the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Youth Concert Orchestra, and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago; and a symposium on presenting today's music.
