Karl Hereim Remembers K. Robert Schwarz
K. Robert Schwarz was a force of nature. I have never seen anyone prepare so thoroughly for program notes, for music articles, and for the interviews he conducted before the writing began. I also watched as the quality of his writing grew from good journalism to something much more - the work of someone with graceful control of the written word. Rob was also my best friend, and while I am deeply saddened, we shared musical moments I will never forget: Listening to all kinds of music while sharing the score; Paul Bowles being interviewed in Tangier by Rob, talking about the New York music scene in the 30s and 40s while absently tapping out polyrhythms with his fingers; the first time I heard Steve Reich's music live, because Rob was moderating a discussion with Reich; driving across Texas as the sun set while listening to Benjamin Britten's Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings as loudly as possible. Music was Rob's passion and vocation, and I know I am one of many who were touched by his unique voice. |
