The Foundation for Contemporary Performance Art recently announced its 1999 grants. Three composers were among the 15 grant recipients who each received $25,000. The composer recipients were: Jonathan Bepler of Brooklyn, NY; John Bischoff of Berkeley, CA; and Carl Stone of San Francisco, CA. Each year the Foundation asks a pool of artists and arts professionals to propose exceptional individuals, artists' collectives, and performing arts groups for grants. These nominees are reviewed by the Foundation Directors who award grants on the basis of the merit and imaginativeness of the artists' work and the effect such recognition and support might have at this point in their careers. The grants are intended to encourage artistic exploration and development, providing recipients with means to "buy time" to engage in a variety of projects of their own choosing.
