Barlow Endowment Announces 1999 Commissions

The Barlow Endowment for Music Composition has announced the recipients of the 1999 International Orchestra Competition as well as the 1999 Barlow Commissions. Composer Kevin Putz was selected from among 300 applicants from all over the world as the winner of the International Orchestra Competition. Putz will compose a 15 to 20 minute orchestral work to be performed in January 2002 by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the Utah Symphony Orchestra. Putz, who recently received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Eastman School of Music, was selected by a panel of judges that was comprised of the members of the Barlow Board of Advisors: Claude Baker, LaMar Barrus, Barlow Bradford, Stephen Jones, and Chen Yi; as well as representatives from the Utah Symphony Orchestra and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra - Bundit Ungrangsee and Frank Proto, respectively.
The Barlow Commission recipients for 1999 are:
- George Arasimowicz of Winfield, IL for a harp composition for the 2002 Harp Congress Symposium to be held in Geneva, Switzerland.
- John Costa of Salt Lake City, UT for a string quartet to be performed in 2000 for the NOVA Chamber Music Series.
- Richard Festinger of San Francisco, CA for a percussion duo for the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players.
- Robert Maggio of Media, PA for a baritone and piano piece for San Sylvan and David Breitman.
- Jeff Manookian of Sandy, UT for a concerto for flute and orchestra for the Salt Lake Symphony Orchestra.
- Steven Ricks of Salt Lake City, UT for a work including marimba, vibraphone, drum-set, and compact setup performed by Talujon and Dominic Donato.
- Kurt Rohde of San Francisco, CA for a cello and piano piece for Emil Miland and Eric Zivian.
- Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez of San Francisco, CA for a string quartet for the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble.
