Margun Music Joins Music Sales Group
The catalogue includes the concert works of Alec Wilder and the Greek composer Nikos Skalkottas, as well as concert music, jazz, vernacular music, and early music. Margun Music has supported composers at the earliest stages of their careers, including Ellen Taaffe Zwilich (whose Pulitzer Prize-winning Symphony No. 1 is part of the catalogue), David Lang, Steven Mackey, Nicholas Thorne, Theodore Antoniou, and Olly Wilson. Gunther Schuller, founder and president of Margun Music as well as a longtime AMP composer, relates: "Although it is not easy to contemplate the departure of a catalogue that has been a part of my life - indeed my home - for some 25 years, I am nonetheless very pleased that Margun and GunMar Music are becoming part of the Music Sales Group. This is a company that embraces the Margun philosophy that 'All musics are created equal' and I know it will be a compatible fit." Schuller will maintain a role with the company as Consulting Editor. Margun's inventory of printed music will be distributed by Shawnee from its Delaware Watergap PA, headquarters, while the works available for rental will be housed at the G. Schirmer Rental Library in Chester NY. For an interim period the European agent fror Margun will be Bote & Bock / Boosey & Hawkes in Berlin. The acquisition of Margun Music is latest in series of purchases by Music Sales of concert music companies, which began with G. Schirmer/AMP in 1986 and also includes Chester Music, Novello & Co., Edition Wilhelm Hansen, Shawnee Press, and Uniòn Musical Ediciones. Music Sales has worldwide headquarters in London, American headquarters in New York City, and offices in Paris, Madrid, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Tokyo, and Sydney. |
