The Dale Warland Singers New Choral Music Reading Program, now in its twelfth year, was held May 24 and 25, 1999, at Sundin Hall on the campus of Hamline University, St. Paul.
This year's program actually began last fall when the Singers sent out a national call for scores from young or emerging composers. Over 175 composers responded with samples of their work. From the applicants, four were commissioned to write a short work for the Dale Warland Singers.
The four were Andrew Bleckner of Frazer PA, Alla Borzova of Pelham NY, Peter Knell of Charlottesville VA, and Jacqueline Jeeyoung Kim of Bayside NY.
Each composer's piece was rehearsed and then read during the two sessions in May. After the reading session, Ms. Kim was awarded a commission for the 2000-2001 Dale Warland Singers subscription season.
During their stay in the Twin Cities, each composer took part in a career development workshop at the Jerome Foundation, received coachings from Dr. Warland, and took questions and answers from the choir and audience at the reading session.
The Dale Warland Singers New Choral Music Reading Program is underwritten by the Jerome Foundation with additional support provided by the Alice M. Ditson Fund.
