elf-publishing used to be a default position for me: no corporate publisher had brought out my music so I was the one copying scores and parts. Later I made a conscious decision to take my career into my own hands, to claim full responsibility for finding performers and an audience. That's when I really became a self-publishing composer. Publishing isn't photocopying and mailing; it's marketing and promotion and a strategy for building a business and a livelihood. In the short term it's putting together projects and opportunities and income; in the long term it's an investment in the value of my copyrights.
