Favorite 2012 musical moment:

In August, Third Coast Percussion was featured at the end of the Museum of Modern Art’s John Cage Day, in celebration of what would have been John Cage’s 100th birthday. Third Coast played a great deal of Cage’s music this year, and we released an album as well. But that concert felt very close to Cage–perhaps because he had such a rich personal history at MoMA. The audience sat through a light rain to hear the world premiere of RENGA:Cage:100, a piece we curated in which 100 composers contributed 5-7 seconds of their music. It was an incredible evening.

New Year’s Resolution for 2013:

I want to go to more live performances. I go to a lot of concerts, but Chicago is lousy with great dance, theater, etc. I saw some this year that I loved, some that I did not love, but I just want to see more and more.

Looking forward to in 2013?

Some incredible things I can’t tell you about! Third Coast has some very exciting projects in the works that will be announced soon. But one thing I can mention is that we will be performing the new piece Augusta Read Thomas wrote for us entitled Resounding Earth on tour around the country, and we’ll also be releasing an audio and video recording of the piece from the same team that created our John Cage DVD/CD on Mode Records. It sounds and looks amazing and we can’t wait to share it.
