What are you looking for in pieces of new piano music? Julie Steinberg

When I consider a new score, I’m immediately on the lookout for craft and content. I try not to be ideological in my choices, but rather to expose myself to many styles and techniques. Naturally I’m drawn to music that is well written for the instrument, which is organically pianistic with concern for matters of color and sound. I also look for music that forces me to stretch my imagination and to think differently. While I love a technical challenge, difficult notes and rhythms in and of themselves can be an empty vessel. I’m more interested in what it all adds up to. Basically, I’m looking for challenge and content that work on multiple levels: intellectual, emotional, psychological and physical.
