…is it any different than what i look/listen for in pieces of old piano music?

a sense of necessity:
about the pitches,
about how the notes move from one to another,
about the articulation, dynamics, rhythm, structure,

or (equally intriguing, sometimes) the lack thereof…
some sense that the music just has to be what it is.

and also?
that the score invites practice,
that phrases ask to be played, pulled apart, backwards, etc.
that it really wants to be heard.
