The process of learning a new piece is like learning a new language, so I’m drawn to works that are set in a striking, imaginative, communicative idiom. Strong ideas, clear syntax, a vivid personality, drama, and structure are the elements that I enjoy shaping and responding to. A great piece allows me to find more and more in it over time, and challenges my own powers of imagination. The works that are most important to me, and the ones I’ll continue to seek, are those that introduce me to new points of view, or to new worlds, that I could never before have envisioned.
