The Friday Informer: Look Who’s Relevant Now

At the beginning of the week, you might have read about the road ahead and been tempted to just pack up your manuscript paper and go get an MBA. Some of you had previously come to a similar conclusion and were not exactly full of Hallmark encouragement. Even if you managed to survive, your 9th symphony was statistically pretty much guaranteed to kill you.

But wait—there is fame to be found in being a not-dead-yet composer. And even if our commander in chief is—shocker!—not exactly up to speed on matters musicical, not all governments are in the same straights.

In the interest of musical progress, I’m all for fun with broadband, scraping up libretto ideas where you can, and mixing up your categories (even throwing them out altogether), but it gets a little scary when it starts to sound like Charles Wuorinen was right about certain matters of over-estimated compositional prowess. Wonder what the reviews will look like.
