Bang On A Can E-Fest Underscores People’s Commissioning Event

Ever wonder about the people who can commission an entire piece of new music? Ever want to be one? Once again, the members of Bang On A Can are demonstrating their dedication to development and innovation in the new music community through their People’s Commissioning Fund project. In a field facing ever-decreasing financial support for innovative artists, the annual event offers “member-commissioners” the chance to support a composer’s work, whether they can give $5 or $5,000, and every year hundreds of people heed the call. An admission-free concert of the new commissions is then performed by the Bang on a Can All-Stars.
This year’s event, scheduled for May 2 at Miller Theatre in New York City, will feature composers Eve Beglarian, John King, and Matthew Shipp. Also on the program, Evan Ziporyn will perform “Partial Truths” from his Cantaloupe Music release “This is Not a Clarinet,” and the classic “Worker’s Union” by Louis Andriessen.
To underscore Bang On A Can’s success since it’s founding in 1987, the group has also launched it’s first e-festival, a feature that is promising to become an annual event on the site. From April 27 to May 31, the site will offer an array of live video from the 1988 and 2001 Bang on a Can Marathon archives and additional works will be posted daily, including footage from this year’s People’s Commissioning Fund concert. The festival pages of the site also offer a forum discussion area and live chats scheduled with Bang On A Canners David Lang, Julia Wolfe, Steven Schick, and Evan Ziporyn.
