American choreographer Merce Cunningham, 90, died Sunday night in Manhattan, reports the New York Times. The posting notes: “With his collaborator and life partner John Cage, Mr. Cunningham’s most celebrated achievement was to have dance and music composed independent of each other. His choreography showed that dance was principally about itself, not music, while often suggesting that it could also be about many other things as well.”
According to Merce.org, the Cunningham Dance Foundation and Merce Cunningham Dance Company will receive visitors in the Merce Cunningham Studio July 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
- The New York Times posted the news and has a video piece with highlights of Cunningham’s work.
